Holidays for Heroes Service Project
Soldiers’ Angels is again making small gift packages for our military men and
women who will be away from their families for the holidays.
The goal this year is to collect 150,000 pairs of 80% or more cotton, white, gray or
black tube socks and 150,000 signed Christmas or Holiday Cards. They will be
sponsoring sock drives throughout the United States at various businesses.
This year they will once again aim to give small gifts to 150,000 deployed and
wounded soldiers. The ‘Holidays for Heroes’ project strives to make sure that
every soldier deployed in a combat area receives a small, but welcome gift and a
card with holiday greetings and encouragement. The gift is a coffee mug bearing
the Soldiers’ Angels logo and contains items such as 150-minute international
calling cards, hot chocolate and cider mix, a power bar, and socks. These are
mailed to soldiers in combat areas and delivered personally by individual
Soldiers’ Angels in military hospitals.
If your troop would like to participate by collecting socks and making holiday
cards, please contact Donna O’Brien. Donations need to be turned in no later
than October 15th so they can be forwarded to the collection point in
California.
Because the shipping costs can become very expensive, a
small donation ($1 or $2) from each participating troop would be greatly
appreciated!
Guidelines:
(1)
Socks must be new and 100% cotton; only plain colors (white, gray or black) will
be accepted.
(2)
Cards can be purchased or homemade. All Christmas/Holiday cards are to be
signed. If you want, you can add your mailing label to the inside of the cards,
in addition to your signature. Some of the soldiers do like to write back if
they have the time. You can add a message to the troops, if you like, but it
can't be political or inappropriate. All envelopes are to be left
unsealed. For homemade cards, the troops love them and they do not need
envelopes.
(3)
Please turn your donations in to Donna O’Brien no later than October 19,
2007.
